Facebook R&D Manager, Optical Integration in Redmond, Washington

We are currently seeking an innovative scientist with experience in designing and modeling advanced optical systems for near-to-eye display applications. This is a full-time position and requires an advanced degree in optical engineering, physics, or similar, and a strong background in optical system design and innovation. Successful candidates must be comfortable working in a dynamic cross-functional team and exhibit excellent interpersonal communication skills.

Required Skills:

  1. Manage team of optical scientists and engineers with focus on integration and validation of complex optical systems for near near-to-eye display applications

  2. Build engineering capabilities and processes for development, debugging, and testing of display systems, components and modules. Incubate the technologies and team capabilities towards readiness for technology transfer and NPI

  3. Collaborate across multiple internal teams on definition and execution of research and development roadmap

  4. Identify and manage industry partners to augment capabilities

  5. Create career development plans, manage performance, create performance reviews, and recruit optical engineers and scientists

  6. Provide team guidance, feedback, education, coaching and mentoring

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. 5+ years of experience in optical sciences or engineering in industrial research and development

  2. 3+ years of engineering management experience

  3. Experience with optical systems design, testing, characterization, and manufacturing technologies

  4. Knowledge of optical technologies including imaging and illumination systems, photometry, color science, and visual optics

  5. Experience with standard optical design tools and methods

  6. Knowledge of designed experiments, data management, and statistical data analysis methods

  7. Experience with taking a technology from early stage to product launch

  8. MS or PhD in Optical Sciences or Physics or related field with 5+ years of experience in research and development of optics or photonic systems
