Facebook Optical Scientist, Geometric Optics (PhD University Grad) in Redmond, Washington

We are currently seeking innovative researchers to develop next generation near to eye display and imaging systems at our research location in Redmond, WA. This Optical Scientist is a full-time position and will be responsible for developing optics and related technologies as technology building blocks to enable next generation head mounted display architectures.

Required Skills:

  1. Drive development of system requirements to create new virtual experiences and advance technologies necessary to create product architectures that can deliver these requirements

  2. Support modeling and prototyping for next-generation optics and displays

  3. Engage cross-functionally with other researchers and engineers in Oculus Research to develop concepts that advance the entire product pipeline (hardware, middleware, and applications)

  4. Collaborate with external groups to advance our research goals

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD degree or completing a postdoctoral assignment in the field of Optical Sciences, Physics, Electrical Engineering or similar

  2. Must be available to start employment on or after April 1, 2018

  3. Experience in working on applied research or product development of optics or photonic systems

  4. Experience in optics including imaging, illumination, radiometry and photometry, physical and geometric optics, statistics, and polarization

  5. Experience in one or more optical design tools such as Zemax, FRED, or ASAP

  6. Experience with optical metrology tools such as interferometry, image quality testing, etc.

  7. Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration

  8. Able to obtain work authorization in the US beginning in 2018

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience in sources (lasers and LED's), spatial light modulators, diffractive optics, optical materials, and thin films optics

  2. Experience in developing technologies that has resulted in successful transition into high-volume consumer products

  3. Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences such as Applied Optics, Optics Letters, Optics Express, and relevant SIGGRAPH, SID, OSA, SPIE or similar

  4. 2+ years experience in MATLAB or Mathamatica or another program which enables custom analysis

  5. 1+ years experience with color science, colorimetry, and visual optics
