Summary:

You're a roboticist with a deep knowledge of soft active materials and a passion for working on breakthrough soft robotic technology. You are interested in how to rationally design and rapidly manufacture soft robotic mechanisms using novel manufacturing methods and new active materials for actuation. At Facebook Reality Labs(FRL) you'll be involved in building cutting-edge prototypes and user experiences that explore the future of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). Work alongside expert research scientists, mechanical engineers, material scientists, electrical engineers and software engineers to create the technology that makes VR and AR pervasive and universal. Required Skills:

  1. Design and manufacture soft robot devices

  2. Specify material properties for new composites for soft actuating, sensing, and logic-capable materials

  3. Integrate on board sensing and implement feedback control on soft robot systems

  4. Perform mechanical and electrical experiments using traditional and custom-built materials testers

  5. Leverage bleeding-edge commercial additive manufacturing machines and invent new manufacturing methods where needed

  6. Working with leading academic researchers on advancing our knowledge of soft active materials, large deformation mechanics, and novel rapid manufacturing techniques and apply them to soft robotics

  7. Collaborate in a team environment across multiple scientific and engineering disciplines, making the architectural tradeoffs required to rapidly deliver soft robot prototypes

  8. Learn constantly, dive into new areas with unfamiliar technologies, and embrace the ambiguity of AR/VR problem solving

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Bioengineering, Materials Science, or a related field

  2. 3+ years’ experience in mechanical design or engineering

  3. Experience in soft robotics design

  4. Experience working across disciplines to drive system solutions

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. 3+ years soft robotics design experience

  2. Masters or PhD in related field

  3. Experience creating 3D models and 3D printing

  4. Experience with soft material casting or injection molding

  5. Experience with pneumatic systems, robotics and automation, or other electro-mechanical systems
