Facebook Materials Researcher in Redmond, Washington


You are an engineer or scientist with deep knowledge in robotics and soft materials. You have expertise in modeling, simulating, and controlling highly deformable structures and machines. You are comfortable working on problems defined by ambiguity while leading strongly interdisciplinary teams.

At Oculus Research, you will be involved in building cutting-edge prototypes and user experiences that explore the future of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). You will work alongside expert research scientists, mechanical engineers, material scientists, electrical engineers and software engineers to create the technology that makes VR and AR pervasive and universal. Required Skills:

  1. Lead research into computational modeling and numerical simulation of soft structures and machines.

  2. Lead or assist in leading machine learning research towards the discovery of scientific models capable of predicting soft mechanism behavior.

  3. Lead or assist in leading research to discover real-time and robust control strategies of soft robots exhibiting rate-dependent, hysteretic, and highly non-linear dynamics.

  4. Lead and mentor a team of researchers.

  5. Collaborate closely with other expert researchers on topics from additive manufacturing to human psychophysics to materials science.

  6. Define fundamental challenges and long-term vision for your own research as well as for your collaborative teams.

  7. Learn constantly, dive into new areas with unfamiliar technologies, and embrace the ambiguity of AR/VR problem solving.

  8. Patent and publish high impact discoveries.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Ph.D. (or M.S plus 4+ years industrial research experience) in robotics, mechanical engineering, bioengineering, or another field.

  2. 3+ years experience with computational modeling and numerical simulation of soft matter, soft robots, or highly deformable structures.

  3. Proven track record of robotics and soft materials research, including publications or patents in each.

  4. Experience leading teams of engineers and/or scientists.

  5. Experience with communication and working across disciplines.

  6. Available to start employment on or after March 1, 2018.

  7. Obtain work authorization in the United States beginning in 2018.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Expert in Abaqus, ANSYS, COMSOL, and/or custom FEM software.

  2. Experience implementing machine learning (e.g. CNN, RNN, etc.) algorithms.

  3. Experience in implementing controllers on soft and deformable robots.
