Summary:

Facebook Messenger is one of the most popular products in the world for people to connect and interact. It is used by over 1 billion people monthly for: text/photo/video messages, audio/video calls, game play, connecting with businesses, interacting with a thriving ecosystem of third party digital bots, hosting and participating in rooms and groups, and much more.

Messaging Infrastructure is the globally distributed back-end which powers Facebook Messenger, ensuring the successful delivery of tens of billions of messages every day to customers across the world. Few organizations operate world class infrastructure at this scale, and ensuring the highest levels of service availability, performance and efficiency is an incredibly exciting and challenging mission!

In this position, you will redefine 'state-of-the-art' while working with some of the world’s most talented Engineers. New hires in this role go through engineering bootcamp and are able to champion building an overarching understanding of the whole system architecture. As peer to Engineering Leads, Managers and Product Managers, the individual will heavily contribute to planning, strategy definition, execution, evangelism and negotiating cross-team dependencies while representing the core infrastructure perspective, and establishing themselves as a valuable addition to the team.

Required Skills:

  1. Manage software and hardware engineering programs in a matrix

  2. Define and own key metrics and key performance indicators

  3. Articulate the technology, requirements, goals and milestones of your team

  4. Collaboratively define the vision for building a FB scale state-of-the-art global messaging infrastructure

  5. Work with Engineering and Product Management to define your team's strategy

  6. Partner with key infrastructure groups across the company to support Messaging Infrastructure needs

  7. Reduce surprises during execution and own project management and progress reporting

  8. Bring a strong sense of execution and ownership to the team

  9. Make your technical stack transparent with great documentation, demos, training sessions/tutorials and articles/blogs

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. B.S. in a technical discipline or equivalent experience

  2. 7+ years of software engineering, systems engineering or similar experience, in addition to project/program management experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. 10+ years of software engineering, systems engineering or similar experience, in addition to project/program management experience

  2. Web or Internet start-up environment and technical infrastructure management experience

  3. Communication skills and experience working with highly technical management teams

  4. Understanding of message queuing systems at 1M MPs scale

  5. Understanding of multi-tier storage systems at petabyte scale

  6. Grasp of advanced networking concepts including calculation of e2e latency and latency impact, global site load balancing and network peering

  7. Familiarity with BCDR concepts including failover, region drains and recovery operations

  8. Experience managing service resource consumption and capacity planning

  9. Strong organizational and coordination skills along with multi-tasking capabilities to get things done in a fast-paced environment

  10. Ability to motivate and focus a large collaboration to reach challenging goals

  11. Interpersonal skills, including relationship building and collaboration within a diverse, cross-functional team

  12. Analytical and problem-solving skills, exposure to large-scale systems
