Summary:

We're looking for a Taxonomist develop an ontology to power content classification and enrich our content graph to improve the advertising experience on Facebook for people and businesses. The right candidate with be self-directed, capable of working independently in ambiguous environments to define deliverables, shape outcomes and lead teams toward successful results. The candidate must be able to thrive in a flat, fast-moving environment that relies on lightweight processes to deliver huge impact.

Required Skills:

  1. Support multiple client teams so they understand category foundations and elements to make connections between them in order to build a semantic data model

  2. Develop and apply in-depth expertise for how our customers perceive and think about our products, their classification and attributes in order to search for them, including researching and modeling product categories and attribute nuances across different locales

  3. Work closely with engineers to build machine learning and other classification models, prioritizing and managing projects and deliverables effectively while adapting to changing business needs, processes and requirements

  4. Provide guidance about ontologies and semantic representations, supporting recommendations with data

  5. Analyze and optimize processes, owning data integrity and taxonomy effectiveness

  6. Coordinate and build alignment with teams and stakeholders across Facebook's family of apps and service to optimize for consistency and interoperability

  7. Partner with PMs, engineers, product designers, researchers, and content strategists to oversee the user experience of a product from conception until launch (and then some)

  8. Promote taxonomy at Facebook and in the broader community of design and content professionals

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. 5+ years experience developing and managing product taxonomies

  2. Experience using taxonomy management systems to maintain categories, attributes, and other metadata

  3. Ontology development and information domain modeling experience

  4. Proven experience presenting technical and metadata information in technical and non-technical audiences

  5. Proven experience working on projects and deliver in customer-focused, cross-functional teams

  6. Experience thinking at a high level about product strategy and vision

  7. Experience in building and shipping taxonomies and features for e-commerce websites, or software

  8. A portfolio or other work samples showing e-commerce taxonomy work

  9. Experience partnering with data science and knowledge with data

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Master’s Degree in Library Science or Information Management

  2. 7+ years experience developing and managing product taxonomies for business (such as e-commerce or retail)

  3. 7+ years of information architecture experience

  4. Background in data science

  5. Metadata design experience

  6. Product/UX content strategy experience

  7. Experience with social products
