Facebook seeks a highly motivated team player with a passion for online intermediary liability issues to serve as Counsel, Content. This role will tackle cutting-edge issues on a global scale arising from content posted by users on Facebook, Instagram, and the company’s other services. The ideal candidate will have experience with user-generated content and legal regimes relating to online intermediaries, including the Communications Decency Act (CDA) under US law and the E-Commerce Directive under EU law. There will be a particular focus on content-related matters involving defamation and local law violations (and less so on IP and quasi-IP matters such as rights of publicity). Days are fast-paced and action-packed, and we are looking for someone that is eager to roll up their sleeves and problem-solve on content-related matters of all kinds. The position is highly cross-functional, working closely with other legal teams and key business units, including the company’s operations, public policy, and communications teams.
Provide legal advice on incoming reports relating to content posted by users on the company’s services, including Facebook and Instagram
Develop and apply policies and practices arising under “safe harbor” laws involving the company’s obligations to address potentially unlawful user-generated content
Coordinate with cross-functional teams on legal, PR, and policy issues on content-related matters
Manage intermediary liability and notice-and-takedown matters with a worldwide network of outside counsel
J.D. degree (or foreign equivalent) and membership in at least one U.S. state bar
2+ years of experience relating to user-generated content and online intermediaries, from in-house or at a law firm
Experience with legal obligations of online intermediaries, including notice-and-takedown
Experience with content-related legal issues, including defamation
Experience assessing legal, business and reputational risks
Experience multi-tasking on priorities and projects
