Building 8 brings together world-class experts to develop and ship groundbreaking products at the intersection of hardware, software, and content. We have a clear mandate to ship products at scale. In particular, seemingly impossible products that define new categories that advance Facebook's mission of connecting the world. The B8 team will apply DARPA-style breakthrough development at the intersection of ambitious science and product development. It will operate on aggressive, fixed timelines, with extensive use of partnerships in universities, small and large businesses. The Product Launch Team has the responsibility for taking breakthroughs and delivering them to market at scale. Building 8 seeks a Camera System Engineer who has extended experience of leading high-performance camera hardware development from concept to production volume ramp in consumer electronics. We are looking for a slightly impatient individual willing to face down their fear of failure to accomplish bold things. This is a full-time position based in our Menlo Park office.

Required Skills:

  1. Define engineering requirement specification for design, test and manufacturing of camera module, optics and other camera components.

  2. Interact with cross-functional engineering teams (Product design, Industrial design, Electrical Engineering) for camera hardware development and system integration.

  3. Lead manufacturing partners on camera hardware design evaluation, prototyping, qualification and production bring up.

  4. Lead camera sub-system validation and testing (including image quality, electrical and mechanical testing) in both internal Lab and at manufacturing sites.

  5. Failure analysis and debugging of camera hardware at both module and product level.

  6. Create proof of concepts camera hardware around the latest camera hardware technologies.

  7. Off-shore supplier travel required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. BS/MS/PhD in Optics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Imaging Science, Physics or related field.

  2. More than 2 years’ hands-on experience in camera hardware development over the full product life cycle from product definition to NPI and ramp.

  3. Knowledge of camera module design principles and best practices with knowledge of image quality fundamentals and their system drivers.

  4. Knowledge of camera module manufacturing process.

  5. Data analysis experience with JMP, MATLAB or other analysis software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Passion for Facebook’s mission.

  2. Detailed understanding of overall systems interactions in the image pipeline.

  3. Working knowledge across the following areas with detailed experience in at least one:

  4. Standard imaging interfaces and protocols in the typical consumer platform.

  5. Compact Lens Optics design & testing.

  6. Camera module mechanical design and tolerance analysis.

  7. Camera module electronic circuit design and signal integrity & power integrity analysis.

  8. Image sensor characterization and design.

  9. Depth sensing hardware development.

  10. Image quality evaluation methodology (test algorithm, chart, lab setup).

  11. Advanced camera module manufacturing process development.

  12. Experience with latest generation mobile and consumer electronics chipset architectures.

  13. Android camera HAL knowledge.

  14. Deep curiosity for science and technology.
