As an Infrastructure Partner Engineer focused on fiber infrastructure initiatives, you will work closely with a broad Facebook cross-functional team to engage partners in the area of Fiber Backhaul Infrastructure. This includes identifying potential bottlenecks for connectivity, devising and planning infrastructure expansion and structuring projects that support infrastructure sharing and collaboration. In parallel, you will interface with MNOs, ISPs and wholesale bandwidth providers (both terrestrial and submarine) to help Facebook positively impact the diverse telecoms ecosystem. This position is full time and is based in London.
A backhaul technical expert dedicated to designing, from the ground up, the most efficient, cost effective backhaul solutions using transmission mediums such as fiber and wireless (microwave, mmWave, VSAT) technologies.
Work with the Facebook fiber infrastructure and partner teams to create reference architectures, design carrier-grade products, select technologies and source vendor solutions for shared backhaul networks leading to the most scalable and lowest cost per bit (Opex and Capex) deployments.
Support the full lifecycle of network hardware roll-outs from ideation and planning through RFI / RFP, contract development and beyond into actual deployment, network acceptance and operational launch.
Passionate about helping Facebook's partners deconstruct and reconstruct the mobile network as part of reimagining the telecom value chain.
Advocate internally at Facebook and the partner community at large on how to maximize opportunities to successfully deploy new telecom infrastructure across partners.
Contribute to development of local, regional and international network strategies aimed at radically reducing the cost of high bandwidth services while simultaneously increasing the fiber network footprint.
Assemble presentation materials and other written technical documentation in support of cross-functional communications with Facebook as well as with our external partners.
Support the direction and expansion of the team, helping to scope future roles as the charter of the team grows.
Previous carrier-scale backhaul networks experience (8+ years) in infrastructure development or network development across one or more key infrastructure areas: terrestrial fiber, submarine, wireless access, wireless backhaul / backbone and core networking.
Understanding of data network architecture and design principles coupled with expertise with planning and deploying different wireless access and backhaul networks with a large range of data throughput requirements.
Broad engineering and operational experience with key traditional (SONET / SDH, Microwave, VSAT) and emerging (DWDM + ROADM, PON, Ethernet) transport technologies.
Experience with legacy backhaul network topologies and design strategies employed by the major 2G/3G/4G mobile network suppliers.
Experience in backhaul network design and optimization including usage of industry standard planning tools, capacity estimation, traffic modeling, network dimensioning and network health evaluation.
Understanding of wholesale bandwidth products (IP transit, Ethernet, Dark Fiber) and pricing structures & levels.
Ability to understand network operator requirements and identify alternate approaches to more efficiently plan networks using multiple data sources coupled with advanced analytics.
Familiarity with internet user data usage patterns, high bandwidth applications and impact on infrastructure.
BA/BS or higher in an Engineering field or equivalent degree/experience.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills including experience speaking to both technical and business audiences. Comfortable interacting with the full spectrum of partner resources from field to C-suite.
Foreign language skills a plus.
Least developed / frontier markets experience.
An understanding of rapidly emerging network topologies, technologies and design strategies such as: mmWave / 5G, C-RAN (fronthaul, midhaul, backhaul), small cells, Wi-Fi off-load and SDN/NFV principles.
