Role and Scope of Position:

Plans, directs and manages the division Safety and Health Administrators in assisting the CL&P organization in managing its safety program and policies based on predetermined goals and objectives.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for making recommendations and presentations to management based on sound safety methodologies.
  • Serves as technical and internal management consulting resource regarding injury and illness prevention and regulatory compliance.
  • Provides overall strategy and direction for field staff.
  • Plans, develops, and evaluates personnel within the scope of the jobs responsibility.
  • Systematically monitors the results against expectations and adjust programs/processes for continuous improvement.
  • Maintains, interprets and communicates OSHA regulations, represents the company to compliance officers and other officials.
  • Advises management about regulatory issues and develops compliance plans.
  • Develops policies and management systems for ensuring safety, health and regulatory compliance. Evaluates the effectiveness of existing policies and updates as needed.
  • Analyses and interprets injury/illness and safety observation data and makes recommendations to management regarding corrective actions.
  • Identifies training needs and consults with Training Group on course content and delivery.
  • Advises management about the state of its safety and health performance and recommends action to improve it.
  • Works closely with unions to resolve safety and health issues.
  • Consults to safety management teams and local safety committees.
  • Maintains and controls the financial budget.
  • Technical Knowledge/Skill/Education/Licenses/Certifications:

    Technical Knowledge/Skill: Must be a leader capable of influencing management to fulfill their safety responsibilities. Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with all levels of the organization and before large audiences. Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to function both independently and as an effective member of a team. Ability to analyze information, determine facts and make decisions accordingly.

    Education: A Bachelor’s degree in safety sciences, safety management, or a similar injury prevention discipline or the equivalent is required (advanced degree desirable). Professional certification as a CSP, or the desire and intention to pursue certification is a plus. 

    Experience: Through knowledge of the full range of OSHA regulation and sound safety management principles and practices. Ten years of experience in Safety & Health is required. Familiarity with the Transmission and Distribution operations is strongly desired.
