Facebook is seeking a Mechanical Systems Engineer to join our Connectivity Lab Team. We believe connecting the world is one of the greatest challenges of our generation, and that everyone deserves access to the knowledge, tools and opportunities that come from being connected. That’s why we, along with other tech companies, launched Internet.org (http://internet.org/), a global partnership to make the Internet available to the two thirds of the world’s population that doesn’t have it. The Connectivity Lab is doing research to develop the next generation technologies to connect everyone on the planet to the Internet. We are developing complex communications technologies that bring together electro-optical, opto-mechanical, and software systems in an integrated package. The successful candidate will have experience taking the constituent elements of complex payloads and developing them into integrated systems, including fixture design, integration procedures, environmental testing, specifying and standing up test assets, and creating and executing verification and validation matrices. This position is located in our Woodland Hills office (near Los Angeles).

Required Skills:

  1. Provide oversight to the fabrication, assembly, and acceptance testing of space flight hardware

  2. Develop integration and test plans and procedures based on system requirements for opto-mechanical payload hardware

  3. Execute integration and test activities at increasing levels of system integration, relying on both internal teams and external vendor resources

  4. Define facility, laboratory and test equipment requirements, lead procurement or development of necessary resources

  5. Review, critique and troubleshoot thermal, structural, and mechanical integrity modeling and analysis to predict and optimize the system performance

  6. Maintain the integrity and safety of the mission-critical flight hardware throughout pre-launch activities

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with at least 5 years of related experience

  2. Experience in one or more of the following areas: opto-mechanical design and test of laser communication or remote sensing systems, mechanical systems including structures, configuration, mechanisms, structural analysis, and integration and test

  3. Direct experience planning and executing aerospace hardware integration and test activities, including materials selection for ground support equipment, experience with thermal vacuum testing, experience with vibration testing

  4. Experience in solving mechanical engineering problems, perform trade studies, and developing conceptual configurations

  5. Experience in academic practices and standards across applications related to mechanical engineering

  6. Experience with engineering and analysis tools and software, i.e. Pro/E, Solidworks, Matlab, ANSYS

  7. Experience with Thermal, Structural, Mechanical Design and Tolerancing (GD&T)

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with at least 10 years of experience working on airborne or space flight hardware/systems

  2. Experience in mechanical engineering practices and standards for airborne and spacecraft flight hardware and systems

  3. Direct system integration experience with space-based optical communications systems

  4. Experience with RF-mechanical design, packaging and integration/test

  5. Demonstrated experience in spacecraft configuration and mechanisms
