Summary:

Facebook is seeking a Mechanical Engineer experienced in the design and construction of Critical Facilities to become part of our data center engineering team.  Our data centers are the foundation upon which our software operates.  Building and operating reliable and efficient data centers is essential to support the growth of Facebook.  The data center engineering team collaborates with all key stake-holders to ensure engineering and design of our data centers incorporate considerations from micro-levels (servers and IT equipment design requirements) to macro-levels (mechanical cooling and power distribution options) to ensure maximum efficiency and reliability of our compute infrastructure. This position is full-time and located in Menlo Park, California.

Required Skills:

  1. Collaborate with internal stake-holders to define project design criteria and develop Basis of Design

  2. Manage consultants to implement the project through schematic design, design development, to construction documents

  3. Manage the design build contractor to ensure the project meet the business and technical needs defined in the BOD

  4. Provide construction administrative support to the project manager during construction with tasks including, but not limited to, responding to RFI’s, issuance of technical bulletins, review submittals and shop-drawings, and conducting source inspections at vendor factories

  5. Work with Commissioning (Cx) Agent, contractors, and operations team to complete various levels of start-up and commission including Integrated System Testing (IST) with tasks including, but not limited to, review of Cx scripts, closing critical punch-lists item before IST, and tracking/closing global commissioning QAQC items

  6. Collaborate with Menlo Park based and local data center operations teams to incorporate latest lessons learned from operations to the latest greenfield design projects

  7. Review consultants’ engineering calculations, run independent engineering and cost analysis

  8. Research new designs, materials, and construction methods for data center HVAC equipment and related components

  9. Travel to datacenter sites for engineering studies, mechanical systems audits, startup testing, and full Cx, as required

  10. Provide instructions to design consultants, installation contractors, and validate quality of installed works

  11. Take ownership and work to achieve the goal with good team spirits

  12. Respond on an as-needed basis to emergencies

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. BS in Mechanical Engineering

  2. Knowledge of HVAC systems including Direct Evaporative Systems, Chilled Water Systems, Condenser Water Systems, Pump Controls, Glycool/Glycol, AHU units (DX, split, RTU, CRAC, etc.), CRAH Units, Raised Floor Systems, HOT/COLD aisle containment, and Building Management System/Controls Automation

  3. Knowledge of industry standards, building codes and safety standards including UMC, NFPA, ASHRAE, UBC, UMC and LEED

  4. Trouble shooting and analytical skills

  5. Provide solutions to projects under pressure

  6. Familiar with construction process and cost estimating process

  7. Fluent in English

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Mechanical Professional Engineer registration

  2. Minimum of five (5) years professional experience in building design and construction, with data center or mission critical design, construction, operations

  3. Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, Visio, Bluebeam software, FLOTHERM or Tileflow
