Summary:

The B8 team will apply DARPA-style breakthrough development at the intersection of ambitious science and product development. It will operate on aggressive, fixed timelines, with extensive use of partnerships in universities, small and large businesses. The Product Launch Team has the responsibility for taking breakthroughs and delivering them to market at scale. Building 8 seeks a Failure Analysis Engineer who will be responsible for architecting and implementing a robust process for conducting failure analysis on our products during development, early field failures after launch, and infant mortality failures prior to design reliability prediction. This is a two-year position based in our Menlo Park office.

Required Skills:

  1. You will help capture and drive improvements back into product design, factory test capabilities, supply chain quality and software

  2. Defining and setting up a process workflow to capture field failed returns and conduct failure analysis

  3. Understanding assembly and test processes at JDM partners and identifying areas of opportunity and test gaps

  4. Work closely with Product Quality team to quantify impact of key failure modes

  5. Failure analysis of development dogfood units and drive improvements with multiple engineering teams back into the design

  6. Liaison collaborative support from JDM partner into Menlo Park (if needed)

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. 5+ years of experience in hands-on failure analysis support

  2. Communication, problem solving, and collaboration skills

  3. Knowledge of analytical techniques (SEM, FTIR, X-Ray/CT, Optical microscopy)

  4. Ability to manage multiple projects at once

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. BS degree in engineering or equivalent field

  2. 7+ years of experience working on failure modes of complex electro-mechanical systems of consumer electronics

  3. Materials analysis techniques

  4. Experience in working with overseas manufacturing

  5. Electrical testing and characterization (multimeter, curve tracer, oscilloscope, TDR)
